Philippa and Alex got married in Mayfield, Staffordshire in June 2015, with a garden reception in Snelston. The whole wedding day was a labour of love from the couple, family and friends. With quirky, creative and personal touches galore, it was a glorious day – despite the torrential downpour (not what you’d expect from midsummer!)
It was planning this wedding (and helping out with a few more since!) that inspired Philippa and her mum Mary to found Country Garden Weddings – so it’s a wedding close to our heart.
The whole day was fabulously captured by Dominique Bader, so explore the images below, and look out for our range of décor and accessories in action!
Philippa and Alex: “From the beginning, we wanted to make sure that the wedding we were planning reflected the marriage we wanted to build, and we wanted as many of our friends and family involved as we could. We got married in Mayfield church (where Philippa’s parents live and she grew up) and decorated the church with flowers arranged by a family friend in crystal vases, and huge milk churns filled with blooms by Nadia di Tullio who also made the stunning bouquets and buttonholes. Philippa’s sister was bridesmaid, and Alex (as well as his best man and ushers) wore ‘Liberty Print’ ties to match our god-daughters flower-girl dress.”
“We felt so honoured to be able to have our reception in some very close friends’ garden, and we hired a beautiful vintage ‘Petal’ marquee from Top Marques – and it was a good job we did because as the reception began, the rain came POURING down! It didn’t dampen any spirits, though, and the marquee was the perfect blank canvas for a creative, personal and quirky reception!”
“We folded 1000 paper cranes (a japanese wedding tradition) and hung these from the rafters of the marquee, and decorated our trestle tables with hundreds of crystal vases filled with garden flowers arranged by a family friend.
Blackboards directed our guests, and Philippa’s dad made a spectacular light-up New York skyline (a nod to our engagement in the Big Apple!) Every guest had a paper crane placename and liberty print napkin tie, and our geeky sides came out with a Tardis Postbox (Alex is a Dr Who fan!) and Golden Snitch Truffles (Philippa is more than a bit fond of her Harry Potter books!), both made by Philippa’s sister.

“Enjoy every minute of your wedding day – and of the planning! A wedding lasts for just one day, but the planning lasts much longer and is a chance to involve and spend time with the people in your life. We made sure we took a step back from the action every now and then to look around at the people we love most in the world and just think ‘Wow! We made this… just think about what else we might make in the future…!”
Congratulations to Philippa and Alex!
